We created this Christmas message via Victorinox ( the people who make the swiss army knives) who have been collaborating with the very clever paper cut artist Rob Ryan, if you head over to their site you can make some Rob Ryan style messages to send yourself, and if you have a minute take a look at this Youtube clip of Rob speaking about his work.

We are closing at 5pm on Christmas Eve and having a small festive break, we'll open again on the 7th January all rested and ready for the year ahead. 2011 has been a great year for us, thanks to all you lovely people who have shopped with us and taken the time to tell us that you like our shop, gallery and the products we sell, it means a lot to us to get such great feedback.

We have lots of exciting things planned for 2012. We'll be launching our re-branding and our first exhibition of the year FIRE and ICE will open in late January, just in time for the Up Helly Aa season!

YULE Exhibition

Our 2011 YULE Exhibition is now open, the Exhibition runs until 24th December and all artwork is available to purchase and take away with you straight away, no waiting till Christmas eve to collect.

We have a great selection of artists exhibiting with us this year, local favourites Mike Finne and Ruth Brownlee are complimented by new works from Gallery favourtie Dee Beale. International artists Aliette and Perry Lancaster have supplied us with work and we have gorgeous glass bead Jewellery in from Julia Hay. Emily Hogarth has supplied us with a selection of her stunning limited edition screen prints. Amanda Colville is exhibiting her cheery prints, all produced using an old Mangle! There are Photos from our own Mark SInclair, textiles from Suzanne Shearer and festive jewellery from Jayne Kelly.

Festival Ceramics by Mini Moderns now in stock

We are delighted to have in stock the Festival range of ceramics by Mini Moderns. Already proving popular as a wallpaper design, ‘Festival’ by Mini Moderns is a personal celebration of one of the biggest influences on their design work, the 1951 Festival of Britain, which celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2011.

The tableware is being launched to coincide with this important cultural landmark. The design features highlights of the 1951 exhibition. Geometric shapes interplay with abstract representations of the iconic Skylon, the Dome of Discovery and the Royal Festival Hall. Its linear forms reflect the modernist architectural vision of structures specially commissioned for the festival including Mini Moderns favorites – the Transport Pavilion and The Lion and the Unicorn Pavilion.

Mini Moderns Creative Directors, Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire explain how the collaboration came about. “We teamed up with Cubic’s Nicky Sloan, founder of Magpie, to produce the Festival tableware collection because she, like us, is a fan of the Festival of Britain and a collector of designs from the mid-20th century.” They go on to explain, “Mini Moderns and Magpie is a match made in heaven. Nicky already loved the design, and her expertise in producing tableware helped push us creatively, so that we have abstracted the design to produce really dynamic individual pieces. The result is a collection in which no two pieces are alike – mix and match in the truest sense.”

These ceramics were recently named by Elle Decoration Magazine as Buy of the Month

Fantastic new screen prints by Scottish artist Stuart Simpson who works under the name Fledgeling.

"In my work I try to create totemic imagery, imbuing the subjects with a mythological status. I like to create images which suggest a narrative, inviting the viewer to speculate and imagine. I work using varied media; printmaking, pyrography, veneer and drawing and painting. I like to engage in a process which leads to the creation of a highly stylised and graphic image, but also often textured and earthy. I try to keep my work simplistic reducing the subject to its necessary components. I like my work to remain humble. I studied three dimensional design at grays school of art, graduating in 2006. I currently live in Glasgow where I work as a self employed artist and illustrator."

Kate McLelland studied Theatre Design in London before moving to Edinburgh to work as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 2010 she won the V&A ‘design a Christmas card competition’ and came first runner-up in London Transport’s design competition. She is now completing an MA in Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. Amongst the many things that inspire her are Flemish book illuminations, the work of Walter Crane and folklore and fairy tales.

Christmas Cards in the Shop from Selected Shetland Designers

We have some great Christmas cards for sale in the shop on Commercial Street from selected Shetland Designers, a great opportunity to buy a piece of Christmas mini art to send to friends and family, or maybe just keep for yourself....

We have a very limited number of Jono Sandilands 'Socks Cards' created at the same time as his Ganzie print currently on display in the upstairs Gallery space, and very much of the same style.

We also have a series of 3 Gocco printed cards by Mandy Tait the designer behind the newly established business Natty Maid, Mandy now lives in Clackmannanshire but hails from the Shetland Isles.

As we said these cards are very limited so best get along the gallery quickly to make a purchase before we're all sold out!

We have got some excellent large mugs in a box stock from Sagaform. The mug holds a very generous 350ml of liquid. The perfect gift for tea lovers (we think they'd be pretty great for coffee or hot chocolate lovers too). Also if anybody is a fan of retro design they are sure to love the prints, designed by Camilla Engdhal who says her designs are inspired by the richness of the floral world. Phatsheep Charity Christmas Cards

PhatSheep is the partnership that runs North Rock Gallery and we have designed some Christmas cards of our own this year. We are donating 20% of the purchase price of each pack of our own designed cards to The ARCHIE Foundation. The ARCHIE Foundation is the offical Charity of Aberdeen (Scotland) childrens hospital and also community based care throughout the Grampian, Orkney and Shetland Region. It is the Childrens hospital with the closest links to our community. We were particularly keen to support the Play Specialists Project which uses play therapy to help keep children calm and happy during their stay in Hospital. The project funds among other things, musical concerts, face painting sessions, magicians visits and pottery classes. We recognise the value of art and craft not just for pleasure but to enhance well being and decided that this was a project we wanted to support and we hope that by buying some of our cards you will support them too.

We are delighted and (a bit excited) to announce our YULE Exhibition, which will run from 5th November until 24th December, and feature work from a variety of talented artists and crafts people. It took us a lot of head scratching to come up with a theme for our first ever Christmas exhibition and we finally settled on the title YULE, the exhibition is a celebration of Winter and Festive Season. We carefully selected the artists and craft people represented in this exhibition and are really pleased with the variety and high quality of the work we have waiting to go into the gallery space. Its going to be a busy few weeks preparing both the upstairs gallery,downstairs shop and the website for the festive shopping season but we're looking forward to the challenge and hope that you will come and visit us and see the great variety of work for sale.

Blafre's super cute storage items arrive

As soon as we saw these items from Blafre way back in August we knew we had to order some for the shop, its been a long wait for them to arrive but well worth it.

Blafre is a Norwegian design brand run by couple Ingrid and Remi. Ingrid is the designer behind all the cute retro designs and Remi runs the business side of the company, their daughter Nora is a big inspiration in their designs.

Based in Oslo Ingrid worked as a news anchor on TVNorge from 2002-2008, she has no graphic training but a long term interest in drawing led her to launch Blafre in 2005, initially focusing on stationery, Blafre is a fast growing business, continually branching out into new products and we look forward to seeing more new designs from them soon. Sandra Isaksson is the founder and designer behind the stylish Scandinavian brand ISAK, She is a graphic designer and illustrator and her design studio works with pattern design for textiles, wallpaper and print as well as book design and illustration.

Isaksson grew up in Sweden but now lives in England with her partner and sons. If you read her website she claims to have been raised by a family of trolls in a Swedish forest where she sepnt her summer sculpting clouds and shaping rainbows! Her style is unmistakably Scandinavian with its clean crisp lines, simple graphic shapes and the splashes of colour influenced by her heritage and travels.

Isak as a company are keen to be responsible in their use of materials, sourcing of products and choice of manufacturers. The majority of their products are made in either Sweden or the UK, all printed products are printed on recycled paper using vegetable inks. All wood in their products come from sustainably managed forests in Sweden. Also a nice touch and an indication that the ISAK team is a happy and healthy one is that the studio is supplied with fresh organic produce from their own allotments and local producers.

Isak is a company who not only produces beautifully deisgned products but cares about its employees, its products and the planet. All this and a little bit of magic in the form of the helpful Trolls makes for a great business!

Recently we've been lucky enough to get a couple of mentions on leading USA design blog Apartment Therapy and this has lead to a fair few sales to customers across the Atlantic. If you've found us via the Odeedoh blog post or through the 10 online UK Art and Design Shops on our Radar article, or if you've just happened across our site then we'd like to say a big Hello and thanks for visiting!

When we decided to open our online shop one of the aims was to reach people outwith our own island community This recent publicity has shown us that the world isn't such a big place after all and that people from all over the word like what we sell, this is a great boost to us, its great to know that people like what we are doing, it makes us smile a lot :)

Butterfly Dishes by Ylva Olsson for Sagaform

We thought you might like to know a bit more about some of the designers behind the products we stock, so here is the first in a series of posts about these talented people.

We stock a range of products from Swedish design company Sagaform, the comany's products are developed by leading designers based on a genuine Swedish design tradition.

Ylva Olsson gradated from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki in 2007 and has set up her own design studio in the southern part of Sweden. A sense of playfulness is key to Olsson's designing with an emphasis on practicality. She has designed the Animal range of ceramics for Sagaform, we are currently stocking the gorgeous butterfly dishes in purple and aqua from this range.

Dalton Ghetti Tiny Sculpture

Wow, we are hugely impressed by this mans miniature sculpture creations. Dalton Ghetti produces these tiny, very tiny, sculptures by carving by hand the Graphite in a standard pencil. Dalton who works as a carpenter only uses basic tools to create these minature sculptures – razor blade, sewing needle and sculpting knife, and possibly the most impressive fact is that he doesn’t use a magnifying glass!

We've just got our latest trays from Isak up on the website for sale. Sandra Isaksson has added two new designs to their range of quirky retro tablewares. Her claims to have been brought up by a family of Trolls in the Scandinavian forest have been a big influence on her creative output!.

The Familjen Tray features a happy retro Scandinavian family and the Oak Tree Tray covered in cute little birds and wild animals would brighten up any autumn table.

Laurie Hastings Prints arrive

We have just got our most recent delivery of artwork up on the walls in the Gallery. Framed Prints arrived late last week from Edinburgh based illustrator and printmaker Laurie Hastings. Her images start life as pencil drawings which she further develops into patterns and layer before using the silk screen printing process to build up the layers of colour. A fantastic new addition to our Gallery walls.

We recently received a box of cute and quirky ceramics, including this good enough to eat oversized cupcake pot from Julie Pettitt.

Julie Pettitt is a ceramicist based in Colchester Essex, Julie uses a variety of techniques to make her work, including slipcasting, marbling and bodystains. She specialises in designing and producing unique interior acessories which are both useful and beautiful, all the items are handmade by Julie herself.

At very affordable prices for a handmade product we think these new pieces are going to be flying off the shelves.

Print Bins stocked up with Ruth Green Prints

We have just loaded up our print bins with some cheery new prints from Birmingham based artist Ruth Green. We have a mixture of screen prints and etchings in stock.

Ruth tells us that each print starts life as a drawing, which is then transferred onto a screen or plate to make the limited edition print. Ruth finds inspiration in countryside scenes, trees, birds and animals, and from the bright fresh colours of Scandinavian design and modern illustration.

She has exhibited her work throughout the Uk and has featured in style Mags such as 'Elle Decoration' so we are really pleased to be able to stock her work in the Gallery.

Sagaform SOS Herring Dish and Jar now in stock

We received our first delivery of goods from Swedish company Sagaform a few days ago. We now have some lovely new Scandinavian style homewares for sale including this great SOS Herring Dish and SOS Herring jar. SOS stands for Sill och Snapps which translates to Herring and Aquavit which were the inspiration for this range of ceramics by Designers Bjork - Forth and the familiar companion to Herring, Dill appears on the ceramic jar. We're not suggesting you need a jar to store you're herring in, if you do this would of course be the ideal container but we're thinking there are lots of other items you could store in the herring jar or serve on the herring dish!

More Donna Wilson Owl Loveliness

Yesterday we received some more felt coasters from Donna Wilson, much needed as they have been really popular and were nearly sold out! We were also really pleased to get our first delivery from Donna of her Sleepy Owl cushions in a summer green colour, we think they would brighten up any sofa or armchair they were placed on.

New Artists in the Gallery

We are excited to have re-hung the gallery space and included a few more Shetland based artists.

Artists currently exhibiting in the upstairs gallery are Andrew Morrison, Amy Fisher, Mary Shearer and Mark Sinclair.Each of these artists uses a different medium to express their inspirations. Several of the artists are directly influenced by the Shetland landscape whilst others gain inspiration from the society in which they choose to live or the medium in which they prefer to work. These artists have travelled varied artistic paths to produce their work, learning their craft through formal education and life learning.

The collection of pieces, whilst different, work well together in the bright gallery space, the colours and themes of the artwork complement each other and provide an insight into the landscape, culture and narrative of the isles.

All works are available for immediate purchase.

New Stock

Sorry for the long delay in blogging, we've been busy sourcing new stock for the shop, and co -ordinating new artists to exhibit in the upstairs gallery.

We've also been working with web designers to create a shiny new website with an online shop which we hope to launch in the summer.

Spring

We are still thinking about Spring here at the gallery and are pleased to have received more of the Matchstick Garden kits in the shop, they were very popular at Christmas time and sold out quickly.

New in are the Micro Giardini - mini gardens in a tin. Each can is filled with seeds and growing compound which in a few weeks become a flowering vase. The Kitchen Garden has 12 diferent vegetables to choose from as do the fower assortment, including: Petunia, Sunflower and Zinnia.

These past few sunny dys mean that Mark has finally had the chance to get outdoors again and has been off to Whalsay and West Burrafirth taking photos, some examples can be viewed on his blog: Phatsheep Photo Blog and will appear as new prints in the gallery soon.

Christmas Opening Hours

Our opening hours in the run up to Christmas are as follows:

Mon - 9:30am - 5:15pm

Tue - 9:30am - 5:15pm

Wed - 12noon - 5:15pm

Thur - 9:30am - 9pm

Fri - 9:30am - 5:15pm

Sat - 9:30am -5:15pm

Sun - 12noon - 4pm

We will close at 5pm on Christmas eve and remain closed until Tuesday 5th January when normal opening hours will commence.

Christmas is Coming...

We are now almost fully stocked for Christmas thanks to last weeks arrival of brooches and cute little hairclips from Lovely Pigeon and some more prints from Jane Foster.

We also have a good few new suppliers including Alice Melvin, Andrea Williamson, Karen Davies Stained Glass (Christmas stained glass decorations due in early next week).

ISAK products have been selling fast and another order, including some new designs we haven't stocked before, should be with us in the next few days.

Flock of Birds Arrive in Shop

A few days ago the postman delivered a much awaited parcel of new stock from Hannah Turner Ceramics. Her retro designed ceramic birds are as cute and comical in person as they look online and a selection of baby birds, chatterbills, crested fantails and the like are now at home on the shelves in our shop. I'm sure they won't be there long before they are all snapped up.

Scandi Style

We are really pleased to have receive some great new stock in the shop from English based Scandinavian designer Sandra Isaksson, her Company ISAK produces some stylish homewares.

We currently have in stock a selection of breadboards,which are made from compressed wood (from sustainable sources) and then laminated. This makes them able to withstand heat which also means they make great placemats for the table:

Pictures and Prints

Now that we are a few months into being open I thought I'd put together a little post about all the lovely artwork we've got in the shop right now.

The gallery space has been exhibiting photography by Mark, a selection of photos from his fairly extensive collection of Shetland images, lots of coastal scenes but some other stuff too. We're sticking with this exhibition in the gallery for just now but we'll be mixing it up with a a few other artists in the coming months, in the meantime Mark is changing the photos he's got on the walls so theres always something new to look at.

Downstairs in the shop area we have a small selection of orginal watercolours of Shetland by local artist Mary Shearer, only a couple left now....

We also have a selection of screenprinted artworks, some of them limited edition by various British artists:

Recently arrived are 2 lovely framed images by Lisa Jones, who also makes the cute googley eyed cards we've been stocking since we opened.

Lovely hand pulled screenprints by Bold an Noble, we are very pleased to get these prints in stock as they have been featuring in all the interiors and design magazines lately. We have some of these framed but a larger selection are available to browse through in the print bins in the upstairs gallery.

Lastly we have a variety of framed limited edition screen prints by Jane Foster, these have been very popular and we're happy to have a second order of them in stock now with new designs and colours.

Advert and Website Updates

Mark has been busy taking lots of product shots of the lovely stock we've got in the shop at the moment, and he's made us up a publicity poster which I hope gives a good indication of the range of stuff we've got for sale!

We've also quickly updated the website, its still a holding page for more to come.......hopefully in the near future the online shop will be up and running.

Busy Weekend and more Stock in the Shop

We've had a busy weekend taking part in the Flavour of Shetland event on Victoria pier where we were selling our photography and textiles in the scorching heat (its a hard life!). Its back to normal shop-life today and I'm really pleased to say that we've got some more lovely prints in from Jane Foster

New Brooches in the Shop

We had some of these lovely brooches from Jane Smallcombe in stock when we opened but they've been so popular we had nearly sold out. So I was really pleased when we had another delivery of these brooches arrive today.

They are all handmade by Jane and each one is unique, she never makes exactly the same one twice, clever lady.

We are expecting more new stock in over the next few days.....very exciting

PhatSheep Fabric Arrives

Bolts of PhatSheep Fabric in the Croft House and Fair Isle Jumper designs arrived yesterday. This is upholstery weight fabric, great for interiors projects.

It will be for sale by the metre in the shop in the next few days, I'm pleased to be able to offer these fabrics for sale finally after so many requests, I think they'd make great curtains......

Finally after weeks of re-decorating we are open!

Heres the inside of the shop, we opened last weekend and things have been going good so far. Its been busy and lovely, after all our efforts over the past 6 weeks, to have so many people stop by and tell us how nice its looking.

Our range of items seems to be selling well and I'm already ordering up some new stock which should arrive in the next few weeks.

Flooring is in, Shelving is being made, Stock is being unpacked and we're a week away from opening......phew!

We are very excited to have a lovely selection of prints in stock from Bold and Noble, heres a sneak peek....
Bold and Noble screenprints are hand pulled here in the UK on 100% recycled card. They have great range of prints and we are pleased to have them for sale in the gallery.

Bright and White

Over the past week there has been lots of activity and now the shop and gallery is looking very white!

We had been hoping to open at the start of May but now its looking more like mid May, which is a shame, but we are waiting on flooring and other bits and pieces to be completed so an earlier opening time just isn't possible.

Deliveries of stock have been arriving amongst the many boxes are lovely notebooks from PumpkinSputnik, prints and purses from Jane Foster and Brooches from Applique.....

The workshop is now minus the dodgy carpet and all painted white... big improvement. The Gallery space is coming together and the downstairs has had at least some of the not very attractive woodchip removed, still a long way to go....

More excitingly stock has started to arrive already which is great, I'll start to post some pics and info about the artists and designers shortly once I've had a chance to unpack it and take some pics, but in the meantime I'l leave you to imagine what these spaces will finish up looking like!

Hello and welcome to the North Rock Gallery Blog. We are Mark and Suzanne and we'll both be blogging here with news from the gallery.

North Rock Gallery is not yet open but it will be shortly, its located in Lerwick in the Shetland Isles, which are group of islands off the north coast of Scotland.

At the moment the gallery is a bit of a building site, with paper half stripped off, bare floor boards and half made cupboards, BUT we'll be working on it lots over the next month or so and hope to keep you up to date with our redecoration and preperations for opening.

Once we are open we'll be telling you about the artists we have exhibiting and the stock we have in the shop as well as a bit of general news about the day to day activities in the shop.
